The Lottery

This cover is based on a climactic scene in The Lottery. Everyone in the town draws a slip of paper and if you get a slip with a dot on it, you get stoned to death. I abstracted the scene using dot marks to represent a crowd of people and a large dot representing the pile of rocks. The large black dot also doubles as the dot on the slip of paper, visible in the negative space. All marks were made using a rock dipped in ink and the lettering was made with an inked edge of soft linoleum.
Process
This process was entirely analog with artwork scanned in and digitally composed. All of the dot marks were made with a rock to give an authentic look and feel to the illustration. I needed to match the roughness and decided to treat the type with an analog method too. I tried using the rock, my hands, dry brushes, but ended up with using a small leftover scrap of linoleum.
